Dr.
Craig was trained and mentored by Dr. John Harrison, major contributing
author of Surgical Endodontics, the iconic text book of
surgical root canal therapy and wound healing. Her research on
surgical
wound healing following surgical root canal therapy was named a
classic upon publication in 1993 by the American Board of Endodontics.
What this means is that all residents in endodontic training programs
within the USA, are to be taught the research and its findings,
and that the display of knowledge and understanding of her research
and findings are necessary when an endodontist is being examined
during specialty board certification.
What does this mean for you? Simply you have come to the right
place for your surgical endodontic therapy.
So why is surgical endodontic treatment needed? In teeth with
severely calcified canals, non surgical endodontic therapy is many
times not able to be performed. In other cases, conventional nonsurgical
therapy may not be successful, allowing the bone surrounding the
involved root(s) to be chronically, or persistently, inflamed.
In such cases, surgical endodontic treatment is typically indicated,
as opposed to tooth extraction.
Periapical, or root-end surgery, is the most common endodontic
surgical procedure performed by endodontists. Also referred to
as an apico or apicoectomy, surgical root canal therapy is accomplished
through small incisions made in the gingival or gum tissues, with
the inflamed or infected tissue, as well as the affected root end,
removed. A small filling may be placed at the end of the root to
help create a seal, and to increase the potential for healing.
The gingival tissues are then sutured to assist a rapid healing
response.
Surgical endodontic therapy is performed in our office with local
anesthetics and sedative medications. Other surgical procedures
we perform include root amputation, hemisection, and intentional
re-implantation.
If you have been told that you need surgical root canal therapy,
an apico, apicoectomy, or periradicular/root-end surgery, give
us a call. We are here to assist you in your treatment needs. You
do not require a referral to be seen as a patient in our office.
